The Auxiliary Fund Insurance of Liability Arising out of Motor Accidents constitutes an institutional body, the purpose of which is the payment of compensation in cases of road traffic accidents where the liable party remains unknown, the vehicle is uninsured, the insurance undertaking has gone bankrupt or its operating licence has been revoked, as well as in specific cases of vehicles for which no insurance coverage exists, in accordance with the applicable law.

The Auxiliary Fund Insurance of Liability Arising out of Motor Accidents was established by Law No. 489/1976 as a legal entity governed by private law; it is subject to the supervision and control of the Bank of Greece and has its seat in Athens. All insurance undertakings carrying out motor vehicle third party liability insurance in Greece shall mandatorily become members thereof, including undertakings operating under freedom of services, mutual insurance associations covering the same risk, as well as legal entities governed by public law or public utility organisations, where their vehicles are exempt from compulsory insurance.
